2. Tolerans çerçevesi soldan sağa nasıl okunur?

Tolerans çerçevesi (feature control frame) her zaman aynı sırayla okunan bölmelerden oluşur:
  1. Geometrik özellik sembolü: Neyin kontrol edildiğini gösterir; ör. konum (⌖), düzlemsellik (⏥), diklik (⊥). Tam liste 4. bölümdeki tablodadır.

Braketimizde A alt yüzey; B, Y ölçülerinin alındığı uzun alt kenar; C ise X ölçülerinin alındığı sol kenar olsun. "A | B | C" şunu söyler: parçayı A'ya oturt, B'ye yasla, en son C'ye it.

Lineer ray bağlanan üst yüzey için paralellik | 0,03 | A, motor flanşındaki merkezleme deliği için diklik | Ø0,03 | A, sensör braketindeki 30°'lik yüzey için açısallık | 0,1 | A tipik örneklerdir; açısallıkta açı kutulu (teorik) verilir.

Profil

5. Çözümlü örnekler

Örnek 1: MMC'de konum ve bonus tolerans

Braketteki delik Ø10 +0,2/0, çerçeve "konum | Ø0,2 Ⓜ | A | B | C".
Kod:
Delik boyut sınırları : 10,00 ... 10,20 mm
MMC (en küçük delik) : 10,00 -> izin verilen konum Ø0,20
LMC (en büyük delik) : 10,20 -> izin verilen konum Ø0,40
Sanal durum (VC)      : 10,00 - 0,20 = Ø9,80

Üretilen delik Ø10,15:
  bonus               = 10,15 - 10,00 = 0,15
  izin verilen konum  = 0,20 + 0,15  = Ø0,35

Ölçülen sapma: dX = 0,09   dY = 0,12
  konum sapması = 2 x kök(0,09² + 0,12²) = 2 x 0,15 = Ø0,30
  Ⓜ olmadan (RFS): 0,30 > 0,20   -> RET
  Ⓜ ile          : 0,30 <= 0,35  -> KABUL

Kod:
Köşe uzaklığı  = kök(0,1² + 0,1²) = 0,1414 mm
Daire çapı     = 2 x 0,1414       ≈ Ø0,283
Kare alanı     = 0,2 x 0,2        = 0,0400 mm²
Daire alanı    = π x 0,1414²      ≈ 0,0628 mm²
Oran           ≈ 1,57  -> yaklaşık %57 daha büyük bölge
Koordinat toleransıyla reddedilen, yalnızca X yönünde 0,12 mm kaymış delik Ø0,24 konum sapması verir ve kabul edilir. Çizime yuvarlatılmış Ø0,28 yazmak yaygındır. İşlev değişmez, kabul edilen iyi parça sayısı artar; Ⓜ eklenirse bonus da kazanılır.

Örnek 3: Yüzer ve sabit bağlantı elemanı formülleri

Konum toleransı alışkanlıktan değil, montajdan hesaplanır. GD&T kaynaklarındaki iki temel formülde H geçiş deliğinin MMC'si (en küçük delik), F bağlantı elemanının MMC'sidir (en büyük çap; anma çapını almak güvenli taraftadır).
  • Yüzer bağlantı (floating fastener): Cıvata iki parçadaki geçiş deliklerinden geçer ve somunla sıkılır. Her parçanın konum toleransı T = H − F.
  • Sabit bağlantı (fixed fastener): Cıvata bir parçadaki diş açılmış deliğe vidalanır (veya pim preslenir). Toplam pay paylaştırılır: T1 + T2 = H − F; eşit paylaşımda T = (H − F) / 2.
Kod:
Braket deliği Ø10 +0,2/0 -> H = 10,0      M8 cıvata -> F = 8,0

Yüzer bağlantı (iki parça, cıvata + somun):
  T = H - F = 10,0 - 8,0 = 2,0
  Her iki parça: konum | Ø2,0 Ⓜ | A | B | C
  Kontrol: delik VC = 10,0 - 2,0 = 8,0 = F  -> en kötü durumda sıfır boşlukla geçer

Sabit bağlantı (braket, gövdedeki M8 diş açılmış deliklere):
  T = (H - F) / 2 = (10,0 - 8,0) / 2 = 1,0
  Braket : konum | Ø1,0 Ⓜ | A | B | C
  Gövde  : konum | Ø1,0 Ⓜ Ⓟ 8 | A | B | C
  Kontrol: braket deliği VC = 10,0 - 1,0 = 9,0
           cıvata sınırı    =  8,0 + 1,0 = 9,0  -> eşit, montaj garanti
  Eşit olmayan paylaşım: gövde Ø0,8 + braket Ø1,2 = 2,0
Sabit bağlantıda bile fonksiyon Ø1,0'a izin veriyor; yani Örnek 1'deki Ø0,2 montajın gerektirdiğinden beş kat dar ve delikler bir şeyi merkezlemiyorsa yalnızca maliyet getirir. Formüller, iki parçanın teorik konumlarının montajda üst üste geldiğini varsayar (ör. iki parça aynı dayamalara yaslanıyorsa). Ⓟ 8, diş açılmış deliğin tolerans bölgesini braketin 8 mm'lik kalınlığı boyunca yukarı uzatır; böylece diş biraz eğik açılmışsa cıvatanın braket içinde ne kadar yatabileceği de sınırlanır ve cıvata delik duvarına dayanmaz. Ölçüm belirsizliği için pay bırakmak isterseniz T'yi biraz küçültün.

  7. Genel notları ve modeli unutmayın: ISO çizimlerinde genel boyut ve açı toleransları için ISO 2768-1 hâlâ yaygındır; genel geometrik spesifikasyonlarda güncel standart, ISO 2768-2'nin yerini alan ISO 22081'dir. ASME çizimlerinde antet toleransları ve genel profil notu kullanılır. Toleransları model tabanlı tanım (MBD) yaklaşımıyla PMI (ürün ve üretim bilgisi) olarak CAD modeline bağlamak, CAM ve CMM programlamasındaki aktarım hatalarını azaltır; araç seçimi için CAD/CAM/CAE yazılım seçimi başlığımıza göz atın.

9. Sık yapılan hatalar

  • Fikstüre uymayan datum sırası: Çerçevede "A | B | C" yazarken tezgâhta parçayı önce C'ye yaslamak.

Not yoksa tahmin yürütmeyin, müşteriye yazılı olarak sorun.

Sonuç ve sonraki adımlar

GD&T, tasarımcının aklındaki fonksiyonu, tezgâhtaki fikstürü ve kalitedeki ölçümü tek bir referans sistemine bağlar. Bir sonraki çiziminizde:

If a drawing shows a small box of symbols and letters next to a feature, you are looking at geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). In ISO it is part of the Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) system, and many shops simply say "geometric tolerances". The box states, in one line, how the part is held, what it is measured from and how much deviation is acceptable. This guide covers reading a feature control frame, datums, the tolerance families (14 symbols in ISO 1101, 12 in ASME Y14.5-2018), and MMC bonus and fastener calculations with worked numbers, plus the ISO and ASME differences that most often cause disputes with suppliers.

Which standards? On the ISO side the core standard is ISO 1101, with datums in ISO 5459, the maximum and least material requirements in ISO 2692 and the fundamental principles in ISO 8015. US customers usually work to ASME Y14.5; this guide follows the 2018 edition, which ASME reaffirmed in 2024 and which is still current. We name standards but do not quote them, so check the current edition before you apply a rule to a production drawing.

1. Why GD&T? Where plus/minus coordinates fall short

One example runs through this guide: a 100 × 60 × 8 mm steel mounting bracket with two Ø10 +0.2/0 holes for M8 bolts. On the old drawing the holes sit at X 15 / Y 20 and X 55 / Y 20 from the lower-left corner, every coordinate toleranced ±0.1. That drawing hides four problems:
  • Square tolerance zone: ±0.1 in X and Y makes a 0.2 × 0.2 mm square. A hole in a corner of the square is 0.141 mm from nominal and passes, while a hole 0.12 mm off in X alone fails, even though it is closer to where it belongs. A bolt cares about distance from the nominal centre, not about direction.
  • Ambiguous set-up: "15 mm from the left edge", but from which point on that edge? A sawn or laser-cut edge is neither straight nor square to the bottom edge. Two inspectors who rest the part differently on the surface plate get two different answers, and both can defend them.
  • Tolerance stack-up: if hole 2 were dimensioned 40 ±0.1 from hole 1, its location from the edge could drift by ±0.2.
  • Size and location are unrelated: a hole made larger gives the bolt extra room, but plus/minus tolerancing cannot pass that room on to location, and a functional gauge is not an option.
GD&T fixes these with four tools: a datum reference frame (DRF) that defines the set-up, basic dimensions that do not accumulate, cylindrical zones that match the function, and material condition modifiers that tie location to size.

2. How to read a feature control frame, left to right

The feature control frame is a row of compartments, always read in the same order:
  1. Characteristic symbol: what is controlled, such as position (⌖), flatness (⏥) or perpendicularity (⊥). The full list is in the table in section 4.
  2. Zone shape: a Ø in front of the value means a cylindrical zone, usually for an axis. Without Ø the zone is usually a width between two parallel planes or lines; for circularity it lies between two concentric circles and for cylindricity between two coaxial cylinders. SØ means a spherical zone.
  3. Tolerance value: the total width or diameter of the zone in mm. You write 0.2, never ±0.1.
  4. Modifiers: circled letters and abbreviations such as CZ after the value (table below).
  5. Datum references: primary, secondary and tertiary, in order of precedence. The order is not alphabetical; it describes how the part is located.
In this guide we write frames as text, with a vertical bar between compartments. position | Ø0.2 Ⓜ | A | B | C reads: the axis of the hole must lie inside a Ø0.2 mm cylinder centred on its true position, which basic dimensions define in the reference frame built from A, then B, then C. Ⓜ says the zone grows as the hole departs from its maximum material condition (MMC); section 5 checks whether 0.2 is a sensible number for this bracket. flatness | 0.05 requires the surface to lie between two parallel planes 0.05 mm apart; form tolerances never take a datum. The boxed locating dimensions are called basic dimensions in ASME and theoretically exact dimensions (TED) in ISO. They carry no tolerance of their own; the allowed deviation is the value in the frame.

A modifier can also follow a datum letter; in ASME, Ⓜ there means MMB (maximum material boundary). As the datum feature departs from that boundary, the part may shift slightly on the gauge (datum feature shift).

3. Datums: building the reference frame

A datum feature is the real, imperfect surface or hole on the part, marked on the drawing with a letter in a box attached to a triangle. A datum is the perfect plane, axis or point derived from it. The datum feature simulator links the two: the surface plate, angle plate, gauge pin, mandrel or fixture locator that stands in for the datum while you machine or measure.

The 3-2-1 principle: a rigid part has six degrees of freedom, three translations and three rotations. A planar primary datum contacts at least three points and removes three of them (one translation, two rotations); the secondary contacts at least two points and removes two more; the tertiary contacts one point and removes the last. A cylindrical primary datum, such as the axis of a pilot diameter, removes four on its own (two translations, two rotations).

Why the order changes the part: on our bracket, let A be the bottom face, B the long lower edge that the Y dimensions come from, and C the left edge that the X dimensions come from. "A | B | C" says: seat the part on A, push it against B, then slide it against C. If B and C are 0.1 mm per 100 mm out of square, switching to "A | C | B" rotates the reference axes by that angle. The second hole, about 58 mm from the corner, moves by roughly 0.06 mm, so its position error, which is expressed as a diameter, can change by up to 0.12 mm. Against a Ø0.2 tolerance, that can move a borderline part from accept to reject. Changing the datum order describes a different part.

Fixture example: on the CNC mill the bracket sits on three rest buttons with face A, is pushed against two locating pins with edge B and against one stop with edge C, and is clamped in that order. If the inspection fixture and the CMM alignment do not follow the same order, a part that is "right" on the machine can be rejected in quality.

Datum targets: on castings, forgings and sheet metal, a whole rough surface does not give a repeatable datum. Instead the drawing shows target points (marked with an X), lines or small circular areas labelled A1, A2, A3, and the fixture puts pins (usually spherical-tipped for point targets) on exactly those spots. The first operation locates from the targets; the machined faces then become datums for later operations.

4. The tolerance families, with practical examples

Form (no datum)

Straightness limits a line element or, with Ø, an axis (a linear shaft, for example). Flatness suits the sealing face of a gasketed pump cover (flatness | 0.05). Circularity judges each cross-section on its own (an O-ring seat), while cylindricity limits the whole cylinder (a hydraulic cylinder bore).

Orientation (datum required)

Typical callouts are parallelism | 0.03 | A for the top face that carries a linear rail, perpendicularity | Ø0.03 | A for the pilot bore of a motor flange and angularity | 0.1 | A for a 30° face on a sensor bracket, with the angle given as a basic (boxed) value. On a flat surface, an orientation tolerance also limits flatness to the same value.

Location

Position is the main control for hole and pin patterns. ISO's coaxiality/concentricity is evaluated on a derived axis (median line) or a centre point, so it usually needs a CMM and takes more effort than run-out; ISO symmetry is classically used for keyways. ASME Y14.5-2018 removed both symbols; position, profile or run-out take their place.

Profile

Profile of a line checks each cross-section of a contour such as a cam plate or an extrusion. Profile of a surface controls an entire free-form surface on a casting or a moulded cover: profile of a surface | 0.4 | A | B | C means 0.2 mm either side of the nominal surface. Without datums, profile controls form only; as datums are added, it also controls orientation and location, to the extent those datums constrain the part.

Run-out (datum axis required)

Circular run-out checks each circular element of a pulley diameter or face against bearing journals A-B. For total run-out (total run-out | 0.02 | A-B), the indicator travels along the whole shaft surface under a lip seal, so the form of the surface and its coaxiality are limited together.

ISO 1101 lists profile under form, orientation or location depending on the datums used, while ASME treats it as a family of its own; either way, the more datums you add, the more a profile tolerance controls.

5. Worked examples

Example 1: position at MMC and bonus tolerance

The bracket hole is Ø10 +0.2/0 with "position | Ø0.2 Ⓜ | A | B | C". For a hole, the maximum material condition is the smallest diameter, because that leaves the most material in the part.
Kod:
Hole size limits      : 10.00 ... 10.20 mm
MMC (smallest hole)   : 10.00   ->  position allowed Ø0.20
LMC (largest hole)    : 10.20   ->  position allowed Ø0.40
Virtual condition     : 10.00 - 0.20 = Ø9.80

Hole produced at Ø10.15:
  bonus               = 10.15 - 10.00 = 0.15
  position allowed    = 0.20 + 0.15  = Ø0.35

Measured offset: dX = 0.09   dY = 0.12
  position error = 2 x sqrt(0.09² + 0.12²) = 2 x 0.15 = Ø0.30
  without Ⓜ (RFS): 0.30 > 0.20   -> REJECT
  with Ⓜ         : 0.30 <= 0.35  -> ACCEPT
Bonus is earned hole by hole: had the same hole been made at Ø10.05, the allowance would be Ø0.25 and the 0.30 error would still fail. Actual size here is the diameter of the largest perfect cylinder that fits in the hole, which ASME calls the actual mating envelope. The virtual condition, Ø9.80, is the number the mating part is designed around: a Ø9.80 pin at true position enters every hole whose size and position are in tolerance.

Example 2: converting a ±0.1 coordinate tolerance to position

The old ±0.1 is a 0.2 × 0.2 square. The drawing accepted holes in its corners, so the design evidently tolerates 0.141 mm of offset, and nothing about a bolt makes one direction special. A circle with that radius gives:
Kod:
Corner distance = sqrt(0.1² + 0.1²) = 0.1414 mm
Zone diameter   = 2 x 0.1414        ≈ Ø0.283
Square area     = 0.2 x 0.2         = 0.0400 mm²
Circle area     = π x 0.1414²       ≈ 0.0628 mm²
Ratio           ≈ 1.57  -> about 57 % more zone
The hole that was 0.12 mm off in X alone, rejected under coordinates, has a position error of Ø0.24 and passes. Rounding to Ø0.28 on the drawing is common. The function is unchanged, more good parts pass, and adding Ⓜ brings bonus on top.

Example 3: floating and fixed fastener formulas

A position tolerance should come from the assembly, not from habit. In the two basic formulas found in GD&T textbooks, H is the MMC of the clearance hole (the smallest hole) and F is the MMC of the fastener (its largest diameter; the nominal diameter is a safe value).
  • Floating fastener: the bolt passes through clearance holes in both parts and is held by a nut. Each part gets T = H − F.
  • Fixed fastener: the bolt screws into a tapped hole in one part (or a pin is pressed in). The total is shared: T1 + T2 = H − F, so an equal split gives T = (H − F) / 2.
Kod:
Bracket hole Ø10 +0.2/0 -> H = 10.0       M8 bolt -> F = 8.0

Floating (two parts, bolt and nut):
  T = H - F = 10.0 - 8.0 = 2.0
  Both parts: position | Ø2.0 Ⓜ | A | B | C
  Check: hole VC = 10.0 - 2.0 = 8.0 = F  -> assembles at worst case, zero clearance

Fixed (bracket bolted into M8 tapped holes in a housing):
  T = (H - F) / 2 = (10.0 - 8.0) / 2 = 1.0
  Bracket : position | Ø1.0 Ⓜ | A | B | C
  Housing : position | Ø1.0 Ⓜ Ⓟ 8 | A | B | C
  Check: bracket hole VC = 10.0 - 1.0 = 9.0
         bolt boundary   =  8.0 + 1.0 = 9.0  -> equal, assembly guaranteed
  Unequal split also works: housing Ø0.8 + bracket Ø1.2 = 2.0
Even in the fixed case the function allows Ø1.0, so the Ø0.2 from Example 1 is five times tighter than assembly needs, and unless the holes also locate something, that tightness only adds cost. The formulas assume the true positions of both parts line up at assembly, for example when both are pushed against the same stops. The Ⓟ 8 extends the tapped-hole zone up through the 8 mm bracket, so if a thread is tapped at a slight angle, the bolt's tilt is also limited where it passes through the bracket and it cannot lean into the wall of the bracket hole. If you want margin for measurement uncertainty, make T a little smaller.

6. ISO vs ASME: the differences that cause disputes

  • Default principle: ASME applies Rule #1, the envelope principle: the size tolerance also limits form, and a feature of size may not break the envelope of perfect form at MMC. There are exceptions, such as commercial stock, and Ⓘ switches it off. ISO's default is the independency principle (ISO 8015): a size tolerance limits only local size (by default a two-point size under ISO 14405-1), not form. If you want the envelope on an ISO drawing, add Ⓔ after the size.
  • Symbols and vocabulary: concentricity and symmetry are not in ASME Y14.5-2018 but remain in ISO and in older ASME editions (Y14.5M-1994, Y14.5-2009). Ⓡ, CZ, SZ and UZ are ISO, Ⓘ and Ⓤ are ASME, and Ⓣ is defined differently in each. Basic dimension and TED, MMC and MMR, virtual condition and MMVC (maximum material virtual condition) are similar ideas, not identical definitions. The standards also describe how datums are established in different detail, so the standard selected in the CMM software can change the result on the same part.
  • Title-block notes: a note such as "Dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5-2018" puts the whole drawing under ASME rules. ISO drawings show "ISO 8015" and general tolerance notes (ISO 2768-1, ISO 22081). In the common legacy note "ISO 2768-mK", the K is a general geometric class from ISO 2768-2, which has been withdrawn and replaced by ISO 22081. A drawing that explicitly calls up a withdrawn standard is normally still read to that standard; if in doubt, ask the customer in writing.
The classic dispute: a 100 mm long pin, Ø20 −0.02/−0.05. On an ASME drawing the pin must fit inside a perfect Ø19.98 cylinder (its MMC envelope), so a pin bent beyond that envelope is rejected even if every cross-section measures in size. On an ISO drawing with no Ⓔ and no straightness tolerance, the pin conforms on size as long as every two-point diameter is between 19.95 and 19.98; its bend is limited only by general geometric tolerances, if any are called up. The pin may not go into its hole, yet the supplier can argue that it meets the drawing. The fix is Ⓔ on mating sizes (Ø20 −0.02/−0.05 Ⓔ) or an explicit straightness tolerance.

Working to customer drawings: confirm in writing, at quotation, which standard and edition apply. Do not "translate" the drawing into your house system; build the CMM program and inspection plan to the drawing's own system. If a drawing mixes the two, such as an ASME note next to a CZ symbol, get the customer to clarify before production starts.

7. Inspection: how each control is measured

  • Flatness vs parallelism: setting the part on a surface plate and sweeping the top face with an indicator measures parallelism to datum A, not flatness. For flatness, put the part on three adjustable jacks, bring three widely spaced points on the face to the same reading, then sweep the whole face. The spread of readings approximates flatness: it can never be smaller than the minimum-zone value and is often slightly larger, so evaluate borderline parts on a CMM with a minimum-zone fit.
  • Height gauge: on simple parts, find the hole centre by measuring the top and bottom of a pin that fits the hole snugly; the position error is then 2 × √(dX² + dY²). This set-up only approximates the datum order.
  • Functional gauge: the fastest check for position at MMC. The bracket gauge has a flat face for A, stops for B and C, and Ø9.80 pins (the virtual condition) at true position; if the part seats, position is good. Hole size is checked separately with a Ø10.00 GO / Ø10.20 NO-GO plug gauge. Build the gauge's own manufacturing tolerance and wear allowance into its design.
  • CMM alignment: follow the frame order: plane A first, then B constrained perpendicular to A, then C. A best-fit alignment to all features makes results look better than they are and does not represent the functional reference frame.
  • Reporting: for each position characteristic, record actual size, dX and dY, position error as a diameter, the tolerance allowed including bonus and the verdict, plus the alignment order and the CMM program revision. For repeatable measurement set-ups, see our test and measurement bench design thread.
Measurement uncertainty and gauge R&R: if uncertainty takes up a large share of the tolerance, accept and reject decisions become unreliable; a common rule of thumb (the 10:1 rule) is to keep measurement uncertainty to about a tenth of the tolerance. In series production, validate the measuring system with a gauge R&R study, part of measurement system analysis (MSA). Widely used automotive guidelines treat a %GRR below 10% as acceptable, 10-30% as conditionally acceptable depending on the application, and above 30% as unacceptable (AIAG MSA manual). Agree the decision rule for results right at the limit (for example per ISO 14253-1) with the customer up front.

If you need help defining an inspection plan and acceptance criteria, or getting data from measuring devices into quality reports, see AIOR's measurement and quality engineering page.

8. Applying GD&T as a designer

  1. Start from function: what does the part sit on, what centres it, what turns or slides? Write the assembly sequence down in a few lines.
  2. Choose datums from the assembly: primary is usually the mounting face, secondary a pilot diameter or dowel hole, tertiary a second pin or slot that stops rotation. Datum features must be accessible, measurable and easy to fixture.
  3. Locate with basic dimensions: use Ⓜ when the function is assembly, no modifier (RFS) for centring and balance, and Ⓛ where a minimum wall must be protected.
  4. Use profile for complex surfaces: one profile callout can replace dozens of plus/minus dimensions. ASME drawings often carry a general note such as "unless otherwise specified, profile of a surface 0.5 | A | B | C".
  5. Calculate the value, do not guess it: use the fastener formulas and a tolerance stack-up (worst case or statistical). Every tolerance tightened without need means a more capable machine, longer cycle times, more inspection and more scrap.
  6. Talk to the machine shop: do your datums match the machining sequence and the fixture, and which process holds which tolerance reliably? Our design for manufacturing thread is a good checklist for that conversation.
  7. Mind the general notes and the model: on ISO drawings, ISO 2768-1 is still common for general linear and angular tolerances, while ISO 22081, which replaced ISO 2768-2, is the current standard for general geometrical specifications; ASME drawings use title-block tolerances plus a general profile note. Attaching tolerances to the CAD model as PMI (product and manufacturing information) in a model-based definition (MBD) cuts transcription errors in CAM and CMM programming; for tool choices, see picking a CAD/CAM/CAE stack.

9. Common mistakes

  • Datum order that does not match the fixture: the frame says A | B | C, but the machinist pushes the part against C first. Datum order, machining set-up and inspection set-up must agree.
  • Perpendicularity without a datum: orientation is always relative to a datum; "perpendicularity | 0.05" on its own means nothing.
  • Position on a feature of size with no size tolerance: bonus, MMC and virtual condition all come from the size limits; without them none can be found. Giving the same location with both a plus/minus dimension and a position tolerance is double dimensioning.
  • Concentricity where run-out was meant: concentricity is expensive to verify. On rotating parts, run-out is usually what the function needs, and an indicator checks it in minutes.
  • Mixing ISO and ASME on one drawing: an ASME Y14.5-2018 note with CZ or symmetry symbols, or an ISO title block with Rule 1 assumed. Every such mix turns into an argument about which rule applies.
  • Measuring "flatness" on the surface plate: that set-up measures parallelism; check flatness on three jacks or with a CMM.

Frequently asked questions

What is GD&T, and how is it different from plus/minus tolerancing?
GD&T is a symbolic language for form, orientation, location and run-out, in which orientation, location and run-out are tied to a datum reference frame. Plus/minus tolerances only limit dimensions; GD&T also fixes how the part is held, uses zones shaped like the function and links location to size.

How do you calculate bonus tolerance?
For position at MMC, the bonus is the difference between the feature's actual size and its MMC. A Ø10 +0.2/0 hole made at Ø10.15 gains 0.15, so a Ø0.2 position tolerance becomes Ø0.35.

What is the difference between flatness and parallelism?
Flatness is a form control with no datum; it looks only at the surface itself. Parallelism is an orientation control relative to a datum, and it also limits flatness to the same value, so a flatness callout on that surface is only useful if it is smaller than the parallelism value.

What should I use instead of concentricity?
On rotating parts, usually circular or total run-out; for coaxial diameters that must assemble, position; for complex surfaces of revolution, profile. ASME Y14.5-2018 removed concentricity. ISO still has it, but verifying it usually takes a CMM.

How can I tell whether a drawing follows ISO or ASME?
Check the title block and general notes: a reference to ASME Y14.5 means ASME, while references to ISO 8015, ISO 2768 or ISO 22081 mean ISO. The projection symbol is only a hint: third-angle projection is the US norm and first-angle is common in Europe and Türkiye, but it does not prove which tolerancing standard applies. If there is no such note, do not guess; ask the customer in writing.

Conclusion and next steps

GD&T connects the function in the designer's head, the fixture on the machine and the measurement in the quality lab through one reference frame. On your next drawing:
  1. State in the title block which system (ISO or ASME) and which edition apply.
  2. Choose datums from the way the part is located in the assembly, and build the fixture in the same order.
  3. Calculate position tolerances with the fastener formulas, and use Ⓜ where the function is assembly.
  4. Agree the inspection method (functional gauge, CMM alignment) with quality before the drawing is released.
  5. Review legacy drawings for plus/minus hole locations that could be converted to position, as in Example 2.
The numbers in this guide illustrate the concepts. For your own parts, work from the current edition of the applicable standard and the customer's specification.
