Soru 2: Ekip neyi zaten biliyor?

Kod:
Müşteri dosyası (STEP / native)
        |
        v
CAD (ana model) --> CAM --> post-işlemci --> CNC
        |
        +--> CAE (sadeleştirilmiş geometri)
+--> Teknik resim (PDF) --> kalite, tedarikçi
+--> PDM / PLM --> malzeme listesi (BOM) --> ERP

  • Giriş seviyesi yeter: Doğrusal statik analiz (küçük deformasyon, akma sınırının belirgin şekilde altında gerilme), modal analiz, kararlı hal (steady-state) ısı iletimi, iki tasarım alternatifinin karşılaştırılması, yapışık (bonded) temaslı basit montajlar.
  • Siemens Simcenter ailesi ve Siemens'in Mart 2025'te satın aldığı Altair'in araçları.

  • Kesitin atalet momenti I = b·h³/12 = 20·40³/12 ≈ 106.667 mm⁴; ankastre uçta moment M = F·L = 300.000 N·mm
  • En büyük eğilme gerilmesi σ = M·c/I = 300.000 × 20 / 106.667 ≈ 56,3 MPa (c = h/2 = 20 mm)
  • Uç sehimi δ = F·L³/(3·E·I) = 1000 × 300³ / (3 × 210.000 × 106.667) ≈ 0,40 mm

IGES'i yalnızca başka seçenek yoksa kullanın.

"Which CAD should we use?" rarely finds its answer in a feature list. The answer sits in three questions: what file your customers and suppliers require, what your team already knows, and how design data flows on to CAM, CAE, PDM/PLM and ERP. Instead of another list of product names, this guide gives you a decision process you can run step by step. It deliberately has no prices or rankings: prices vary by region and reseller, and the right tool depends on your data flow.

1. The three questions that decide the stack

Question 1: What do customers and suppliers require, and in which format?

For your top three customers and top three suppliers, find out:
  • Does a contract or supplier manual mandate a CAD system and release? If native CATIA V5 or NX data is required, the release matters too: a file saved in a newer release generally will not open in an older one.
  • If a neutral format is acceptable, which one: STEP AP242, AP214 or Parasolid?
  • Do they expect drawings, or product and manufacturing information (PMI) on the 3D model? Which drawing standard (ISO or ASME) and which projection method: first angle, common in Europe, or third angle, the norm in the US?
  • Defence and aerospace contracts can restrict keeping design data in the cloud; ask before you pick a cloud-only tool.
If any answer is "mandatory", that item becomes a knock-out criterion: a candidate that fails it never reaches the scoring sheet.

Question 2: What does the team already know?

The real cost of switching CAD is not the licence. It is the productivity dip while people learn, plus templates and libraries rebuilt from scratch. List who has used which tool for how long, and who can write macros, use the API or edit a post-processor. Local job ads also show which tools you will be able to hire for later.

Question 3: Where does the data go?

A toolchain is not a collection of tools but a connected flow. Sketch today's flow first:
Kod:
Customer file (STEP / native)
        |
        v
CAD (master model) --> CAM --> post-processor --> CNC
        |
        +--> CAE (simplified geometry)
+--> Drawing (PDF) --> quality, suppliers
+--> PDM / PLM --> bill of materials (BOM) --> ERP
For every arrow, ask two things: does the data travel natively or through STEP, and does the downstream side update when the design changes? CAM integrated in the CAD tool can regenerate toolpaths after a model change; a standalone CAM fed with STEP needs a re-import and a re-check for every revision. Whether the BOM reaches the ERP by hand, as CSV or through an integration also shapes the choice.

2. CAD comparison: kernel, format, licensing and PDM

The kernel (geometric modelling kernel) is the engine that computes the geometry, and exchange between systems that share a kernel is usually smoother. Licensing terms change often, so get the current terms from the vendor and the reseller in writing.

  • The Parasolid family: between SolidWorks, NX, Onshape and Solid Edge, an .x_t or .x_b file carries the geometry without a kernel-to-kernel translation. If the receiver runs an older Parasolid version, pick that version on export.
  • Cloud: it removes installs and version chasing, but raises questions about connectivity, data location and access after a subscription ends. Write the exit plan up front: can you bulk-export every model as STEP and Parasolid?
  • macOS: Fusion and FreeCAD run natively and Onshape runs in a browser. SolidWorks, Inventor and Creo are Windows applications, and NX dropped macOS support with NX 1847.

Hobby, startup and education licences: the commercial-use limits

Hobby, personal-use and student licences are for learning and evaluation, not for customer work; startup programmes, by contrast, are commercial licences for companies that qualify. These are the terms vendors published as of October 2026 (they change):
  • Fusion for personal use: home-based, non-commercial projects. Autodesk defines it for users who make less than USD 1,000 a year from those projects, limits it to 10 active documents at a time, and restricts exports, manufacturing and simulation features.
  • Fusion for startups: for startups that develop original physical products, a discounted commercial subscription for up to 10 users and a single three-year term that cannot be renewed. It is not offered in every country, and the terms have changed several times.
  • 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS for Makers: personal, non-commercial projects; Dassault Systèmes (3DS) lets you sell items you make for up to USD 2,000 a year. Native files saved with Makers do not open with commercial or academic licences, while neutral formats such as STEP open anywhere. 3DS runs a separate startup programme for businesses.
  • Onshape: the Free plan is for non-commercial use only, and all its documents are public. There is a free Education plan for students and educators, and a Startup Program that gives qualifying startups professional licences at no cost.
  • Student editions: in the student offers on the 3DS online store, SOLIDWORKS comes as xDesign, which runs in the browser, while CATIA installs on Windows and does not run on a virtual machine or macOS; both are for personal use only. Education licences from Autodesk, PTC and Siemens are likewise for learning.
  • FreeCAD: open source under the LGPL, with no licence fee or restriction on commercial use.
The rule is simple: design work done for a company or a paying customer falls outside hobby and education licences, and the small sales allowance in Makers does not turn it into a commercial licence.

When open source is realistic

FreeCAD 1.0 (November 2024) largely mitigated the topological naming problem, where downstream features break when the model changes, and added a built-in Assembly workbench. As of October 2026 the stable series is 1.1, first released in March 2026, and the next release, 26.3, is in release-candidate testing. FreeCAD is a realistic production option when no customer mandates a commercial tool or native format, someone on the team can keep it running without a support contract, assemblies are moderate in size, and a working post-processor exists for your machines.

3. CAM by machine type

CAM choice starts with the machines you run. Before buying the next CNC, factor in the controllers and options of every machine that will share the CAM system.

Machine typeWhat CAM must doWatch for
2.5-axis milling; laser, plasma, waterjetPockets, contours, holes, facing; feature recognition; nesting for 2D cuttingMost CAD-integrated CAM is enough; for 2D cutting, DXF quality decides
3-axis surfacingParallel, waterline (Z-level) and scallop strategies; rest machiningLong programs; controller look-ahead and high-speed settings
3+2 (positional 5-axis)Tilted work planes, safe moves between orientationsThe post must output the controller's plane rotation: for example G68.2 on Fanuc, PLANE on Heidenhain, CYCLE800 on Sinumerik
Simultaneous 5-axisTool-axis control; collision checking that includes holder and fixtureTool centre point control (TCP/TCPM: G43.4 on Fanuc, M128 or FUNCTION TCPM on Heidenhain, TRAORI on Sinumerik); rotary axis limits; machine simulation is a must
TurningRoughing and finishing, grooving, threadingConstant surface speed (CSS), spindle speed limit and controller-specific cycles
Mill-turnLive tooling, C and Y axes, sub-spindle, channel synchronisationThe most expensive and hardest posts; ask for a post and machine model proven on the same machine type
Mastercam, hyperMILL, Edgecam, SolidCAM, PowerMill, NX CAM and the Manufacture workspace in Fusion are a few of the many standalone and CAD-integrated options. What separates them in practice is rarely the number of strategies; it is the post-processor and verification.

The real cost and risk: the post-processor

The post-processor converts toolpaths into G-code your machine understands. A generic post can produce code that runs, yet a wrong tool-change position, a missing safe-start block or the wrong work offset means scrap or a crash. Even Autodesk's own post library tells users to test a post carefully, because it might not match their CNC configuration. Before buying, ask the reseller:
  • Is there a post tested on our exact machine, controller and options, and which customer runs it?
  • Is the post included in the licence, and who makes changes, how quickly?
  • Are the post and the machine model updated with CAM upgrades, and can we edit the post ourselves?

Simulation and verification: a first-part procedure

Toolpath simulation in CAM usually shows pre-post data (CL data); the real check runs on the posted G-code. With a new post or a new CAM, we follow this order on the first part:
  1. Simulate in CAM with the stock, tool holder and fixture.
  2. Read the program header. On ISO-code (Fanuc-style) controls, check units (G21 or G20), plane (G17), absolute mode (G90), work offset (G54 and so on), the tool list and the deepest Z.
  3. For 5-axis and mill-turn work, run the program in G-code-based machine simulation.
  4. On the machine, shift Z zero upwards and do an air cut in single-block mode with a low rapid override.
  5. Cut the first part with conservative parameters, measure it, then optimise. Log every post change with a version note.

4. CAE: when built-in simulation is enough

Most CAD tools offer simulation, built in or as an add-on: SOLIDWORKS Simulation, stress analysis in Inventor, Fusion's simulation (linear static stress in the base subscription, most other study types with the Simulation Extension), Onshape Simulation (included in the Professional and Enterprise plans), Simcenter for NX, SIMULIA roles for CATIA and FreeCAD's FEM workbench.
  • Entry-level built-in tools are usually enough for: linear static analysis (small deformation, stresses well below yield), modal analysis, steady-state heat conduction, comparing two design alternatives and simple assemblies with bonded contact.
  • You need an advanced package or dedicated FEA/CFD for: plasticity and hyperelastic materials such as rubber, large deformation, post-buckling behaviour, frictional contact, fatigue under variable loads, explicit dynamics (drop tests, impact), composites, flow and conjugate heat transfer, multiphysics, and calculations that go into a certification file.
The main tools in that class:
  • Ansys: Mechanical, Fluent, CFX and LS-DYNA, which came with the acquisition of LSTC in 2019; Ansys has been part of Synopsys since July 2025.
  • Abaqus: nonlinear structural analysis, plus explicit dynamics with Abaqus/Explicit. Abaqus is part of SIMULIA, the Dassault Systèmes simulation brand; SIMULIA is not a separate solver.
  • COMSOL Multiphysics: coupled physics (thermal-structural, electromagnetic-thermal, fluid-structure) solved in one model.
  • SimScale: browser-based cloud FEA, CFD and thermal analysis; since the model goes to the cloud, check your customer's confidentiality terms.
  • Siemens Simcenter, plus the Altair tools that Siemens acquired in March 2025.
  • Open source: CalculiX (GPL; reads the Abaqus input format; use it through the PrePoMax front end or FreeCAD FEM), Code_Aster from EDF, and OpenFOAM for CFD (distributed as openfoam.org and openfoam.com). No licence fee, but more learning and validation work.

Before you trust a result: hand calculations and tests

A colourful stress plot is not a correct answer. With every new tool, start from a problem whose answer you know. Example: a steel cantilever 300 mm long with a rectangular section 20 mm wide and 40 mm high, loaded with 1000 N at the free end (E = 210 GPa).
  • Second moment of area I = b·h³/12 = 20·40³/12 ≈ 106,667 mm⁴; moment at the fixed end M = F·L = 300,000 N·mm
  • Maximum bending stress σ = M·c/I = 300,000 × 20 / 106,667 ≈ 56.3 MPa (c = h/2 = 20 mm)
  • Tip deflection δ = F·L³/(3·E·I) = 1000 × 300³ / (3 × 210,000 × 106,667) ≈ 0.40 mm
The FEA tip deflection should land within a few percent of this, slightly higher because of shear deformation. Read the stress at mid-span, on the top or bottom face, rather than at the fixed corner; about 28.1 MPa is expected there. The stress at the fixed corner keeps growing as the mesh is refined: it is a stress singularity, not a real value.
  • Refine the mesh at least twice (a mesh convergence check); if the result still moves by more than a few percent between the last two meshes, the mesh is not fine enough.
  • Reaction forces must sum to the applied load; check units (mm, N, MPa) and material values. Remember that a fully fixed face is stiffer than the real joint.
  • Validate critical parts with strain gauges or a deflection test; for a repeatable rig, see our thread on test and measurement bench design.

5. Data exchange: what each format carries and what it loses

In practice no neutral format carries the feature history: sketches, parameters, constraints and assembly mates are lost, and the receiver gets a "dumb solid" that is hard to edit. That is why every part needs one master model where changes are made. STEP AP242 was created to merge AP203 and AP214 and replace them in an upward-compatible way; the first edition appeared in 2014, and the current one is ISO 10303-242:2025.

FormatCarriesLosesUse it for
STEP AP242Geometry, assembly structure, colours and layers; machine-readable (semantic) PMI when both sides support itFeature historyThe default 3D exchange; model-based definition (MBD) and GD&T on the 3D model
STEP AP214Geometry, assembly structure, colours and layersFeature history; semantic PMI (graphical notes at most)Receivers that cannot read AP242
Parasolid (.x_t, .x_b)The kernel's own exact boundary-representation (B-rep) geometryFeature history, matesParasolid-based systems and the CAM/CAE tools that read it
IGESSurfaces, curvesSolids often arrive as open surfaces that need knitting; last version 5.3 (1996)Only when a legacy system reads nothing else
DXF / DWG2D geometry, layers, line types, textThe 3D model and the link to it; units do not travel reliably to every programLaser, plasma, waterjet, punching; 2D drawing exchange
STLTriangle meshExact geometry, units, colour, assembly structure; resolution fixed at export3D printing when the slicer or print service does not take 3MF
3MFTriangle mesh, units (millimetres by default), multiple objects, materials and colour, metadata, slicer settingsExact geometry; unsuitable for CAD editing or machining3D printing
Automotive supply chains also often ask for JT (ISO 14306) for visualisation and lightweight geometry. Before sending a file:
  • Agree on units, origin and the receiver's software version, and pick the Parasolid and DXF export version to match.
  • Put the part number and revision in the file name, attach the PDF drawing of the same revision, and state in writing whether the drawing or the model governs.
  • Compare volume, surface area and centre of mass between the model you sent and the one the receiver opened; it is the fastest way to catch surfaces lost in translation.
  • In DXF, export splines the way the cutting machine wants them (arcs or polylines) and have the receiver check a known dimension.

6. A 30-day pilot with a scoring sheet

A demo uses the reseller's parts; a pilot uses yours. Run two or three candidates through the same plan, and have at least two engineers score each step.
  • Day 0: pick from real projects a prismatic part, a freeform part, a sheet-metal part, an assembly of typical size and a customer STEP file; write down the knock-out criteria and check the workstation against the vendor's certified hardware list.
  • Week 1: model the parts from scratch, produce drawings with your own title block, then change a dimension and watch how the model reacts.
  • Week 2: open and edit customer files, send them back as STEP, Parasolid, DXF and PDF, and have a real supplier open them.
  • Week 3: program two parts, air-cut them with the reseller's post for your machine, and run a validation analysis like the cantilever above.
  • Week 4: try PDM revisions and release, BOM transfer to the ERP, backup and bulk export; send support a real question and time the answer.

CriterionWeightHow to measure
Customer and supplier data compatibility20Real files open cleanly in both directions?
Modelling productivity on real parts15Time, rework, robustness to change
Drawings and standards10Title block, projection, BOM table, tolerance notation
CAM and post-processor15Air-cut result, code quality, post support
CAE fit5Validation case, analysis types you need
PDM/PLM and ERP flow10Revisions, release, BOM transfer
Team skills and hiring10Learning time, how easily you can hire people who know the tool
Licensing and total cost of ownership10Licence model; training, hardware, post and maintenance (from written quotes)
Data portability5Bulk, readable export of all data
Score each criterion from 1 to 5. Weighted result = Σ(weight × score) / 5, with 100 as the maximum. Example: candidate A scores 5, 3, 4, 3, 4, 4, 5, 3, 4 in table order, which totals 390 and gives 78; candidate B scores 3, 5, 4, 5, 3, 3, 2, 4, 3, which totals 370 and gives 74. When results are this close, look at the heaviest criteria and the risks you logged during the pilot rather than at the total. One rule never changes: a candidate that fails a knock-out criterion, such as a tool that cannot produce the native format your main customer mandates, is out whatever its score.

7. Migration, mixed CAD and common mistakes

  • Switch at a project boundary. Running projects finish in the old tool; the new tool starts with a new project.
  • Freeze the archive. Keep released products as native files, STEP and PDF drawings, read-only, and keep an old licence or at least a viewer for a while to handle changes to legacy products.
  • Migrate selectively. Remodel only active, frequently changed parts in the new tool, especially configurable product families; the rest can stay as STEP.
  • Build the libraries first. Title blocks, templates, standard fasteners, sheet-metal gauge tables and custom properties should be ready. Map fields such as part number and material to the new system in a table, and clean out duplicates before you move anything.
  • One master model in mixed CAD. If the customer uses CATIA and you use SolidWorks, each part is owned by one system and the other side uses that geometry for reference only. Fix format, units, origin and file naming with your partners in writing.
  • Train champions. Train two people in depth first, and let them write the in-house modelling rules.
Common mistakes:
  • Switching CAD mid-project: half the product ends up in one system and half in the other, and every revision risks translation errors.
  • Working on a shared drive without PDM: file names like "final_v3_REV2_really" and a team that does not know which revision went to production.
  • Buying CAM without asking about post-processor support: CAM that cannot produce correct code for your machine is useless, however many strategies it has.
  • Deciding on the reseller's demo parts, or doing customer work on a hobby or education licence.
  • Moving to the cloud without an exit plan, and using FEA results without validation.

FAQ

SolidWorks or Fusion?
It is not a ranking question; the answer falls out of the three questions. If your customers want SolidWorks files, your team knows SolidWorks and you will run PDM in-house, SolidWorks is the natural candidate. If you are a small team that wants CAD and CAM in one tool, works on macOS and is comfortable with data in the cloud, Fusion is a strong candidate. Pilot both with the same parts.

Can I do customer work with a free edition?
Fusion for personal use, Onshape Free and SOLIDWORKS for Makers are for non-commercial use, and student editions are for learning. There are exceptions: FreeCAD is LGPL-licensed, with no restriction on commercial use, and Onshape's Startup Program gives qualifying startups professional licences at no cost. Terms change, so read the current licence text.

Which CAM software should I choose?
Start from your machines. For 2.5-axis and 3-axis work, CAM integrated in your CAD tool is often enough; simultaneous 5-axis and mill-turn need machine simulation and a proven post. Before you decide, ask the reseller for a post tested on your exact machine and controller, and air-cut with it.

Which format should I send to a supplier?
STEP AP242 if the receiver supports it, otherwise AP214, plus the PDF drawing of the same revision. DXF for sheet cutting and 3MF for 3D printing. Use IGES only when there is no other option.

Is built-in simulation good enough?
For linear static, modal and simple thermal work, usually yes, as long as you validate the results with hand calculations. Nonlinear materials, complex contact, explicit dynamics, CFD and certification work need an advanced package and an experienced analyst.

Conclusion and next steps

Choosing CAD/CAM/CAE is a data-flow decision, not a feature contest. Filter the options through customer formats, team skills and data flow, then test the survivors on your own parts:
  1. List the mandatory formats and releases for your top three customers and suppliers.
  2. Draw today's data flow like the diagram above, write down the knock-out criteria and shortlist no more than three candidates.
  3. Run the 30-day pilot with the scoring sheet, including an air cut with the post on your own machine.
  4. Plan the switch at a project boundary and start with the libraries.
