Code:
GSD (cm/px) = sensör genişliği (mm) × uçuş yüksekliği (m) × 100 / (odak uzaklığı (mm) × görüntü genişliği (px))
Örnek varsayımlar: 1 inç sınıfı sensör, 13,2 mm sensör genişliği, 8,8 mm gerçek odak uzaklığı, 5472 × 3648 piksel (20 MP) görüntü. 100 m'de (13,2 × 100 × 100) / (8,8 × 5472) ≈ 2,74 cm/px bulunur; bir karenin zemindeki izi (footprint) yaklaşık 150 × 100 m'dir.

En sık hata, katalogdaki 35 mm eşdeğer odak uzaklığını (bu kamerada 24 mm) kullanmaktır: sonuç yaklaşık 1,0 cm/px çıkar, gerçeğin kabaca üçte biri. EXIF'teki FocalLength alanı gerçek değeri verir; eşdeğer değer ayrı bir alandadır (exiftool'da FocalLengthIn35mmFormat). Kendi kameranızın değerlerini herhangi bir fotoğraftan okuyun, sensör genişliğini ise üreticinin teknik özelliklerinden alın:
Bash:
exiftool -Model -FocalLength -FocalLengthIn35mmFormat -ImageWidth -ImageHeight DJI_0001.JPG

Alan tipiİleriYanKaynak ve not
Genel arazi, şantiye%75–80%60Pix4D 75/60, Agisoft 80/60
Orman, sık bitki örtüsü%85–90%80–85Pix4D 85/85, Agisoft 90/80; daha yüksekten uçun
Düz tarım arazisi%80%80Pix4D
Kar, kum%85%70Pix4D; kontrastı koruyan pozlama
Koridor (çift hat)%85%60Pix4D; yol, kanal, boru hattı
Su yüzeyi——Her karede kara ya da sabit nesne olmalı
Yüzdeyi mesafeye çevirin: çekim aralığı = uçuş yönündeki iz × (1 − ileri bindirme), hat aralığı = hatlara dik iz × (1 − yan bindirme). Görüntünün uzun kenarı uçuş yönüne dik olduğunda 100 m yükseklik, %75 ileri ve %65 yan bindirme 25 m çekim aralığı ve 52,5 m hat aralığı verir; 10 m/s hızda her 2,5 saniyede bir kare gerekir. Aşağıdaki betik bu hesapları bulanıklıkla birlikte yapar (kare piksel varsayımıyla):
Python:
# Örnek kamera; odak uzaklığı gerçek değer (35 mm eşdeğeri değil)
sensor_w_mm, focal_mm, img_w_px, img_h_px = 13.2, 8.8, 5472, 3648
alt_m, front, side = 100.0, 0.75, 0.65 # AGL yükseklik, ileri/yan bindirme
speed_ms, shutter_s = 10.0, 1 / 1000

gsd_cm = sensor_w_mm * alt_m * 100 / (focal_mm * img_w_px)
photo_m = gsd_cm * img_h_px / 100 * (1 - front)   # çekim aralığı
line_m = gsd_cm * img_w_px / 100 * (1 - side)     # hat aralığı
blur_px = speed_ms * shutter_s * 100 / gsd_cm

Code:
RMSE_z = √( Σ (Z_model − Z_arazi)² / n )

  6. Yoğun nokta bulutu, SYM/SAM ve ortomozaik üretin.
  7. Kalite raporunu okuyun: denetim noktası RMSE'si, bindirme haritası, kamera kalibrasyonu.
  8. Dışa aktarın: GeoTIFF (ortofoto, SYM/SAM), LAS/LAZ (nokta bulutu), OBJ (mesh).
OpenDroneMap için örnek komut (fotoğraflar /home/kullanici/projeler/santiye/images klasöründe):
Bash:
docker run -ti --rm -v /home/kullanici/projeler:/datasets opendronemap/odm --project-path /datasets santiye --dsm --dtm --orthophoto-resolution 3 --dem-resolution 3

Yükseklik = GSD × odak uzaklığı × görüntü genişliği / (sensör genişliği × 100). Örnek kamerada 2 × 8,8 × 5472 / (13,2 × 100) ≈ 73 m. Kendi kameranızın gerçek değerlerini kullanın.

A well-planned drone mapping job turns a few hours of fieldwork into a centimeter-level orthomosaic, elevation model and point cloud. A badly planned one produces a mosaic that looks fine but should never be measured from, and most of that difference is decided before takeoff. This guide, written for civil, construction, mining and agricultural engineers and surveyors, covers GSD calculation, overlap and flight patterns, an accuracy strategy built on GCPs, RTK or PPK, the processing workflow, and the coordinate system and permission questions specific to Türkiye.

What drone photogrammetry produces, and where it falls short

Photogrammetry measures from overlapping photos. The software finds matching features (tie points), solves each image's position, orientation and camera model in a bundle adjustment, then runs dense matching to generate millions of 3D points. Typical deliverables:
  • Orthomosaic: one image corrected for perspective and relief so every pixel sits at its true map position; a CAD/GIS base for measuring lengths and areas.
  • DSM (digital surface model): the height of the top surface, including buildings, trees and vehicles.
  • DTM (digital terrain model): bare ground once objects are filtered out.
  • Point cloud: colored points in LAS/LAZ for sections, contours and classification.
  • Mesh: a textured 3D model for facades, structures and heritage documentation.
A camera only measures what it sees: ground under dense canopy, thin objects such as power lines, textureless or reflective surfaces (still water, fresh snow, glass) and poor light are the weak spots. LiDAR is an active sensor; part of each pulse slips through gaps in the foliage, multiple returns deliver ground points under trees, and wires show up in the cloud. It costs more, though, and depends on a good GNSS/IMU trajectory. On open ground, construction sites, quarries and stockpile yards, photogrammetry is usually sufficient and economical; for terrain under forest and for power-line corridors, consider LiDAR.

How to calculate GSD, with a worked example

Ground sample distance (GSD) is the ground distance covered by one pixel, and it limits the smallest detail your products can resolve:
Code:
GSD (cm/px) = sensor width (mm) × flight height (m) × 100 / (focal length (mm) × image width (px))
Assumptions for the example: a 1-inch-type sensor 13.2 mm wide, a real focal length of 8.8 mm and 5472 × 3648 px (20 MP) images. At 100 m: (13.2 × 100 × 100) / (8.8 × 5472) ≈ 2.74 cm/px, and each image covers roughly 150 × 100 m on the ground.

The classic mistake is using the 35 mm-equivalent focal length from the spec sheet (24 mm for this camera), which gives about 1.0 cm/px, roughly a third of the true value. EXIF FocalLength holds the real value; the equivalent sits in a separate tag (FocalLengthIn35mmFormat in exiftool). Read your own camera's values from any photo, and take the sensor width from the manufacturer's specifications:
Bash:
exiftool -Model -FocalLength -FocalLengthIn35mmFormat -ImageWidth -ImageHeight DJI_0001.JPG
Because GSD scales linearly with height, this camera needs about 73 m for 2 cm/px.
Height (AGL)GSDGround footprintRough accuracy expectation (horizontal / vertical)
40 m1.10 cm/px60 × 40 m1.1–2.2 cm / 1.1–3.3 cm
60 m1.64 cm/px90 × 60 m1.6–3.3 cm / 1.6–4.9 cm
80 m2.19 cm/px120 × 80 m2.2–4.4 cm / 2.2–6.6 cm
100 m2.74 cm/px150 × 100 m2.7–5.5 cm / 2.7–8.2 cm
120 m3.29 cm/px180 × 120 m3.3–6.6 cm / 3.3–9.9 cm
The last column applies Pix4D's rule of thumb for the absolute accuracy of a correctly reconstructed project (1–2 × GSD horizontally, 1–3 × GSD vertically). It assumes proper georeferencing with GCPs or RTK/PPK, and it is a planning starting point, not a promise. Ground control sets a floor too: if the GCPs carry a few centimeters of survey uncertainty, 1 cm GSD will not deliver 1 cm accuracy. The heights here only illustrate the math: in Türkiye, P0 and P1 licenses cap the flight envelope at 120 m, and a zone's ceiling can be lower (see the permissions section).

Flight planning: overlap, patterns, speed and light

Overlap starting points

Front overlap is the area shared by consecutive images on a line; side overlap is the area shared between neighboring lines. Starting values from the software vendors' documentation:
Site typeFrontSideSource and notes
General terrain, construction site75–80%60%Pix4D 75/60, Agisoft 80/60
Forest, dense vegetation85–90%80–85%Pix4D 85/85, Agisoft 90/80; fly higher
Flat farmland80%80%Pix4D
Snow, sand85%70%Pix4D; expose to keep contrast
Corridor (dual track)85%60%Pix4D; roads, canals, pipelines
Water——Every image needs land or a fixed object
Convert the percentages into distances: photo spacing = along-track footprint × (1 − front overlap), and line spacing = across-track footprint × (1 − side overlap). With the long image side across the flight direction, 100 m height, 75% front and 65% side overlap give 25 m between photos and 52.5 m between lines; at 10 m/s that is one image every 2.5 seconds. This script does the math, motion blur included (square pixels assumed):
Python:
# Example camera; real focal length, not the 35 mm equivalent
sensor_w_mm, focal_mm, img_w_px, img_h_px = 13.2, 8.8, 5472, 3648
alt_m, front, side = 100.0, 0.75, 0.65 # AGL height, front/side overlap
speed_ms, shutter_s = 10.0, 1 / 1000

gsd_cm = sensor_w_mm * alt_m * 100 / (focal_mm * img_w_px)
photo_m = gsd_cm * img_h_px / 100 * (1 - front)   # photo spacing
line_m = gsd_cm * img_w_px / 100 * (1 - side)     # line spacing
blur_px = speed_ms * shutter_s * 100 / gsd_cm
print(f"GSD {gsd_cm:.2f} cm/px | photos {photo_m:.1f} m ({photo_m / speed_ms:.1f} s) | lines {line_m:.1f} m | blur {blur_px:.2f} px")

Sloped terrain and terrain follow

Most apps hold height relative to the takeoff point. Fly at 100 m over a 40 m hill and the camera is only 60 m above the top: the footprint shrinks to 90 × 60 m while photo and line spacing stay fixed. Front overlap falls from 75% to about 58% and side overlap from 65% to about 42%, so matching weakens over the hill, the model may end up with holes, and GSD varies across the site. Use terrain follow with a reliable elevation model, split the site into elevation bands, or plan the overlap for the highest point. When terrain following, check clearance to masts, trees and cranes separately.

Choosing a pattern: grid, double grid, oblique

  • Single grid: enough for orthomosaics and DSMs over flat to moderately sloped ground.
  • Double grid (crosshatch): stronger geometry on slopes, quarry faces and built-up areas; Agisoft also recommends cross routes.
  • Oblique: tilt the camera off nadir for facades and building sides. Pix4D notes that no single pitch angle suits every mission; set it so the object you want to reconstruct fills most of the frame.
  • Orbit: for a single building or tower, one image every 5–10 degrees, repeated at several heights.

Speed, shutter speed and shutter type

Motion blur (px) = speed (m/s) × exposure time (s) × 100 / GSD (cm). At 100 m, 10 m/s and 1/1000 s, blur is about 0.36 px; the same settings at 40 m (1.10 cm GSD) give 0.91 px. Slowing to 5 m/s or shooting at 1/2000 s brings it back to about 0.46 px. Keep blur well below a pixel, ideally around half. Keep ISO low, lock focus at infinity, switch off in-camera stabilization, and never crop, rotate or resize images before processing.

The mechanical leaf shutters in many mapping cameras, like global-shutter sensors, expose the whole frame at once. A rolling shutter reads rows in sequence, so a moving drone records each row from a slightly different position and the geometry skews. With such cameras, fly slower, use hover-and-capture, or enable the software correction (rolling shutter compensation in Metashape's camera calibration dialog, --rolling-shutter in ODM). Our post on how we pick industrial cameras explains why shutter type is a choice you cannot undo later.

Light and wind

Shadows change direction and length during the day, so flying one site from morning to evening makes matching harder. Overcast light helps on shiny surfaces, midday keeps shadows short, and passing clouds leave patchy tones in the orthomosaic. Wind upsets ground speed and overlap, drains batteries and moves tree crowns; stay within the manufacturer's wind limits.

Accuracy strategy: GCPs, check points, RTK and PPK

Relative accuracy is how faithfully shapes and distances inside the model are kept; it is often enough for a one-off volume or length. Absolute accuracy is whether coordinates land in the right place in the reference frame; stakeout, overlaying design data, property boundaries and comparing surveys over time all need it. A drone on standard GNSS typically has meter-level absolute error, usually worse in height.

Ground control points: count, layout, targets

  • Count: Pix4D requires at least 3 GCPs and recommends 5–10, with more helping in complex terrain. Agisoft asks for at least 10 evenly spread points for the highest quality, and the OpenDroneMap docs call 5 enough for most jobs and 8–10 for larger ones.
  • Layout: corners, edges and always the middle, on high and low ground. Don't line them up, keep them a little inside the boundary rather than on it (ODM suggests 10–30 m, depending on overlap), and make sure each one appears in several images (Pix4D and ODM recommend at least 5).
  • Targets: matte, high-contrast (a black-and-white checker), flat and pinned down. At 2.74 cm GSD a 50 cm target spans about 18 pixels, and its center must be unambiguous. Painted marks on concrete or asphalt simplify repeat surveys.
  • Survey: use a GNSS rover on network RTK or your own base. Store fixed solutions only, record the antenna height and the coordinate and height system, photograph each target, and check in on a known point if one exists.

Check points and RMSE

GCPs are part of the adjustment, so small residuals on them prove nothing. Independent check points stay out of the adjustment and serve only to compare coordinates read from the model with field measurements, usually as a root mean square error (RMSE):
Code:
RMSE_z = √( Σ (Z_model − Z_field)² / n )
If five check points differ by +2.1, −3.4, +1.2, +4.5 and −1.8 cm, RMSE_z ≈ 2.9 cm with a mean of +0.5 cm, a good result at 2.74 cm GSD. With +3.1, +2.4, +4.0, +2.7 and +3.5 cm the RMSE (≈3.2 cm) looks similar, but the mean is +3.1 cm: the error is systematic and usually points to the wrong geoid, antenna height or base coordinate. If a contract relies on Edition 2 (2023) of the ASPRS Positional Accuracy Standards, a formal accuracy assessment needs at least 30 check points; on small jobs, a few well-spread ones still beat none.

RTK vs PPK vs GCP-only

CriterionGCP-onlyRTKPPK

Field effortHighest (5–10+ targets)Few GCPs + check pointsFew GCPs + check points + base log
Office effortMarking targetsLowestExtra GNSS processing
Main riskPoor layout, survey errorsLink dropouts, wrong base coordinateMissing base data, time sync
Best fitAny drone, small sitesRepeat jobs with good coverageRural sites, long corridors
Both RTK and PPK depend on the drone time-stamping each exposure precisely, so they only make sense on drones with an RTK/PPK module that logs those events. For PPK, base data comes from your own receiver or from reference-station RINEX files; TUSAGA-Aktif provides 1-second and 30-second RINEX data for a fee. Setting up the base on its own autonomous (standalone) position instead of a known point can shift the whole model by a meter or more. RTK or PPK reduces the number of GCPs but not the need for independent checks: keep check points, and ideally a few GCPs.

Nadir-only flights on parallel lines with weak control can suffer from doming, a systematic dome- or bowl-shaped deformation caused by mis-estimated lens distortion. Oblique images, cross lines and GCPs or check points in the middle of the site reduce the risk.

Datum, projection and heights in Türkiye

  • Datum: large-scale work uses TUREF, based on ITRF96 with a reference epoch of 2005.0. Crustal motion can move coordinates by centimeters per year, so the transformation from observation epoch to reference epoch matters.
  • Projection: 3-degree Transverse Mercator (TM) zones with central meridians at 27, 30, 33 … 45°E, a scale factor of 1 and a false easting of 500,000 m. EPSG codes: TUREF / TM27 = 5253, TM30 = 5254, TM33 = 5255. Central Bursa (about 29°E) is in TM30, while some western districts fall in TM27, so check the site's longitude.
  • Network RTK: TUSAGA-Aktif (CORS-TR), operated jointly by the General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre (TKGM) and the General Directorate of Mapping (HGM), broadcasts RTK corrections over NTRIP. Its FAQ states that network RTK corrections use the GRS80 ellipsoid, the ITRF96 datum and reference epoch 2005.00; older points produced at epochs 1998.00 or 2000.45 must be shifted to 2005.00 before use. Check subscription terms and fees on the current site.
  • Heights: GNSS gives ellipsoidal heights (h), while most projects expect orthometric heights (H): approximately H ≈ h − N, where N is the geoid undulation. The TUSAGA-Aktif FAQ says N should be determined with the methods in BÖHHBÜY, Türkiye's large-scale mapping regulation (a local geoid, or a refinement of the national geoid model), and that the N values the network broadcasts are for testing only. Confirm the required geoid model in the job specification, check which height your rover outputs, and make sure the software uses the same model.
Don't mix legacy ED50 map data with TUREF/ITRF96. HGM's website explains the ED50–TUREF transformation; for official work, use the method the responsible institution prescribes.

Processing workflow: from import to the RMSE report

Common options, in no particular order:
  • Pix4D (PIX4Dmapper, PIX4Dmatic): commercial, with a detailed quality report and GCP and check point handling.
  • Agisoft Metashape: GCP georeferencing, orthomosaics and DSM/DTM generation are Professional edition features.
  • DJI Terra: built for the DJI ecosystem; it also processes DJI LiDAR data.
  • WebODM / OpenDroneMap: open source (AGPL-3.0), runs on your own server with Docker.
  • QGIS and CloudCompare: open source tools for volumes, profiles, elevation differences and point cloud analysis.
  1. Check the data: drop blurred or badly exposed images; verify geotags and PPK positions.
  2. Define coordinate systems for image positions, GCPs and outputs, plus the geoid.
  3. Align: tie points, camera positions and self-calibration.
  4. Mark each GCP in several images and set some aside as check points.
  5. Optimize: review residuals and fix or drop bad measurements.
  6. Build the dense point cloud, DSM/DTM and orthomosaic.
  7. Read the quality report: check point RMSE, overlap map, camera calibration.
  8. Export GeoTIFF (orthomosaic, DSM/DTM), LAS/LAZ (point cloud) and OBJ (mesh).
A sample OpenDroneMap run, with the photos in /home/user/projects/site/images:
Bash:
docker run -ti --rm -v /home/user/projects:/datasets opendronemap/odm --project-path /datasets site --dsm --dtm --orthophoto-resolution 3 --dem-resolution 3
In OpenDroneMap, GCPs go into a gcp_list.txt at the root of the project folder: the first line names the coordinate system (for example EPSG:5254), and each following line holds easting, northing, height, the pixel position in the image (x, y), the file name and an optional point name. Easting comes first (the Y value in Turkish lists), then northing (X), and each GCP gets one line per image it appears in. An example with illustrative coordinates:
Code:
EPSG:5254
420150.32 4450210.75 105.42 2412 1630 DJI_0123.JPG GCP1
420150.32 4450210.75 105.42 3105 1544 DJI_0124.JPG GCP1

Memory and run time climb quickly with image count and quality settings. Metashape uses supported GPUs for depth maps, VRAM and system RAM become the limit on large projects, and a fast NVMe SSD helps; check the vendors' current system requirements before buying.

The software estimates the camera's interior parameters (focal length, principal point, distortion) during the adjustment. Keep the focal length fixed on zoom lenses and put different cameras in separate calibration groups. Knocks, temperature swings and play in the lens mount can shift these parameters; our thread on sub-pixel drift and camera recalibration shows what that costs in industrial vision.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting overlap to save batteries or time: processing cannot fill the gaps, only a re-flight can.
  • Flying a standard plan over water, glass roofs, solar panels, snow or sand.
  • Surveying GCPs in TM30 but producing outputs in another zone or in WGS84; mixing ellipsoidal and orthometric heights.
  • Swapped columns: Turkish coordinate lists give Y as easting and X as northing, and a swap on import throws GCPs thousands of kilometers off the site.
  • Claiming accuracy from GCP residuals without check points.
  • Flying a rolling-shutter camera low and fast; using the 35 mm-equivalent focal length in the GSD formula.
  • Placing GCPs only at the corners or along a single line.
  • Holding a fixed height above takeoff on sloping ground and missing the overlap loss over hills.

Use cases

Stockpile volume: volume is the difference between the DSM and a base surface, which can be a plane fitted to the toe of the pile, a fixed elevation or an earlier survey. The choice changes the answer directly. Vertical bias weighs heavily: a 2 cm systematic offset over a 2,500 m² footprint is 50 m³. Tonnage also needs a known material density.

Construction progress: fly repeatedly with the same plan, GCPs and coordinate system. The difference between two DSMs gives cut and fill, and overlaying the design model (BIM/CAD) reveals deviations. If the numbers support progress payments, make sure every party accepts the method.

Facade inspection: fly lines parallel to the facade with the camera facing it, at several heights, and use the distance to the facade instead of flight height in the GSD formula. For the business side, see our feasibility study on drone-based facade and roof cleaning.

Agriculture: multispectral cameras support indices such as NDVI = (NIR − Red) / (NIR + Red), where NIR is near infrared. Use a radiometric calibration panel and a sunlight sensor, fly at similar times of day, and raise overlap over uniform crops.

Permissions and personal data

SHGM, Türkiye's civil aviation authority, published a new Unmanned Aircraft Systems Instruction (SHT-İHA) on 30 July 2026. It took effect on publication and replaced the 2016 rules: flight authority now depends on the pilot license level (P0 amateur, P1 commercial, P2 advanced) and on the zone status shown on the İHATTYS map, not on the aircraft's weight. The points that matter most for mapping:
  • License: mapping for a client is a commercial operation and needs at least a P1 license within visual line of sight (Article 6). P0 and P1 flights are limited to 120 m height and 3,000 m visual or horizontal distance, and a lower zone ceiling takes precedence (Articles 12 and 15).
  • Automated missions: the instruction treats flights carried out by pre-programmed systems without the pilot's instant intervention as autonomous operations, which are allowed only with a P2 license and operational authorization from SHGM (Articles 4 and 7). Before taking the job, ask SHGM whether a grid mission that you monitor and can take over falls under that definition.
  • Zones: green zones need no separate operational permission within the published altitude and conditions. Everywhere else counts as restricted and needs a permit, and in red zones the permit depends on consent from the authority that closed the area (Article 12). Check the map with particular care near airports, military areas and critical facilities.
  • Transition: existing drones, certificates and licenses must be brought into the new scheme by 31 July 2027.
Check registration, insurance and permit steps against the current text on shgm.gov.tr before each job. Maps for official use, such as cadastre or zoning, generally have to be produced by authorized survey engineers or licensed offices under BÖHHBÜY and the institution's specification; confirm with the institution first.

If people in the orthomosaic or 3D model can be identified by their faces, license plates or private spaces such as homes and gardens, you are processing personal data under Türkiye's Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK). Fly when fewer people are around, capture no more area than you need, blur faces and plates in shared outputs, and define who can access the data and how long it is kept. For details, rely on kvkk.gov.tr and your legal adviser.

FAQ

What height do I need for 2 cm GSD?
Height = GSD × focal length × image width / (sensor width × 100). For the example camera, 2 × 8.8 × 5472 / (13.2 × 100) ≈ 73 m. Use your own camera's real values.

Do I still need GCPs with an RTK drone?
Fewer, but check points remain essential; only independent ground measurements expose geoid, base coordinate and datum errors.

RTK or PPK?
RTK is convenient for repeat jobs with good mobile coverage; PPK is safer on rural sites and long corridors where links drop. Either way, the base coordinate decides absolute accuracy.

Can I map with a cheap consumer drone?
For visual checks and relative measurements, yes. Rolling shutters, limited planning-app support and meter-level absolute error are the limits; absolute accuracy needs GCPs.

How reliable are stockpile volumes?
Vertical accuracy, the base surface and the definition of the pile edge drive the result. One method repeated every time gives more consistent numbers than one-off measurements made in different ways.

Which SHGM license do I need for drone mapping in Türkiye?
Mapping for a client within visual line of sight is a commercial operation and needs at least P1. Before the job, ask SHGM whether pre-programmed grid missions fall under the instruction's definition of autonomous operations, which would require P2 and SHGM authorization.

Conclusion and next steps

Good mapping starts before takeoff: set the target accuracy, derive GSD and height from it, choose overlap for the terrain, plan GCPs and check points, and fix the coordinate system and geoid at the start. On your first project, process one small dataset with and without GCPs and compare the check point RMSE; nothing shows the method's limits faster. If you need help matching aircraft, payload and data workflow to a mission, the AIOR drone technologies services page describes how we scope such projects.
